Free Rice!

Let me recommend the online vocabulary improvement game, Free Rice. Not just a game, but a way of donating rice to the hungry of the Third World. For every word you get right, 20 grains of rice are donated. I got up to 2,400 grains before I packed in, so you can tell that it is rather addictive. There are some difficult words in there, but, very often you can select the right meaning because all of the other meanings appear to be wrong! What the 'vocabulary level' might be is not explained, but I guess it has something to do with the number of words you get right.
Currently donations stand at over nine thousand million (or nine billion in American) grains of rice donated. That sounds a lot, but it would be nice to see it translated into kilos.

There are 50 "levels of ability" in FreeRice. Three words correctly identified and you go up a level, one word wrong and you go down. As for weight it will actually depend on what type of rice is being used -- I guess that 1,000 grains of standard long-grain rice would be about a pound (c. 0.5 of a kilo if you really must work in this ghastley way of measuring!) and that's what I aim to give every day.
PS I read somewhere that no-one has yet achieved level 50 -- I certainly haven't!
PPS Want to give? Go and look at www.thehungersite.com where you "give" a cup of food for simply clicking onto a page and looking at some ads. Word of warning: the goods advertised are enticing, mainly fair trade, and priced in US dollars which makes them an attractive proposition at the moment.

  2. Actually, it donates 10 grains of rice for each question you get correct and there are tons more subjects than just vocabulary.
